Each year, four professional Shakespearean actors from the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company help our students to perform a scene of their choosing from Romeo and Juliet. The actors help to bring the script alive, teaching students about blocking, stage directions, voice, character motivation, and fight choreography. This project allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in a unique and fun way. In the method of many plays and movies, students can put a modern spin on the timeless story if they so choose. This helps to build on our discussion of the universality of themes in Shakespearean plays and how his plots have been adapted over and over throughout history and even in modern popular culture. Every single 8th grade student participates in this project, and the actors and teachers differentiate and scaffold the activities for all learners. This program has even ignited a love of acting in some students and encouraged them to pursue drama classes in high school. Shakespeare is meant to be performed, and our residency allows students to experience the play the way it was originally intended.” – Teacher The Shakespeare Residency costs $8,000. Dunloggin Middle School was fortunate to receive a grant of $2,820 from the Howard County Arts Council to partially cover this academic enrichment program. DMS PTA contributes the remaining $5,180 from its fundraising and parent and family donations. You can help spark a love of acting and Shakespeare in our students with a generous donation to PTA. To date, we have raised $3,820 of our $6,000 direct donation goal and need your help so we can continue to provide high quality programs like the Shakespeare Residency. Over the next few weeks, we will share teacher testimonials for other PTA-funded enrichment programs, and you will see the positive impact of your donation to DMS PTA.
